Women Driving Cars

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Asalamualaikum Hazrat,

I hope you don’t mind me asking you this question. My wife is keen to know.

Insh’Allah, I shall be arranging driving lessons for my wife with a female driving instructor.

Correct me, if I am wrong, but our ‘Ulema have different views in this regard due to the fitna today, but I believe it will be needed in my case, as I have two kids now, and for her to learn how to drive will be an advantage to the family, so she can go places when it’s important in my absence (when I am at work).

If I choose to go ahead with despite difference opinion, will I be considered sinful? This is my question.

Jazak’Allah.

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

As per the situation described in your question, learning to drive or driving fundamentally is permissible for women. There is no Shar‘ai issue in doing so however, women should observe purdah while driving. While driving alone, she should ensure that there is no namehram(marriageable kin) in the car and refrain from driving at an occasion where there is fear of fitnah(strife).
