Chewing Sound While Eating

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah

Sometimes when people are eating there is a loud chewing noise coming from their mouth, what are the Islamic teachings regarding such behavior?

Walaikumassalam Warahmatullah

It is part of the etiquettes of eating food that during the course of a meal, one does not perform an action which becomes a source of agony, disgust or discomfort for others. Chewing with a loud noise may be a source of agony and discomfort for others and it is against the rules of sophistication and decency. One should refrain from such actions.
