Taking Pictures

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Dear Scholars,

I would appreciate it very much if you will let me know whether it is permissible in Islamic Shariah Rules to take and preserve  pictures or videos of a wedding ceremony and celebration.

Jazakallah

Whether it is a marriage ceremony or any other occasion, taking picture of any living thing is prohibited by the prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Taking picture of living thing is against the order of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Hazrat Aisha (R.A.) wife of Muhammad (PBUH) says, Rasoolullah (PBUH) said; “whoever takes picture will be punished on the day of judgment and will be asked to make those pictures alive”. And said, “The house that contains picture of any living thing, Angels (of Blessing) do not enter in the house”.

Ref: Sahi Bukhari Volume 2 Page 188, Sahi Muslim Volume 2 page 201. Based on these Hadiths, pictures and movies are not allowed in Islam.
