Permission for not Fasting for an Old and Diabetic Person

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalam u Alaikum,

I hope this email finds you in the best of health and iman.

My mother is 69 years old and has been a diabetic patient. When she fasts, her sugar levels drop very low sometimes as low as 70-50 which can be very dangerous. She refuses to not fast and refuses to break her fast if it gets too low. Ex. It is 5:30 and her sugar levels has dropped to 70 and her voice has started to shake. I told her to break her fast instead she said she will lay down to minimize movement so her levels don’t drop even more. However, this is not a guarantee. We (her children) tell her that her Lord is not merciless that would require her to fast and tell her she has a responsibility to her body as it belongs to Allah. I have heard from people that if a doctor has said not to fast and it is harmful for her body then it is wrong for her to fast Islamicaly.

Please tell me what she should do? Is it wrong for her to fast in such conditions?

الجواب وبالله التوفيق

If the situation described in the question is correct then it is permissible for your mother to skip fasting and give فدیہ  (fidyah) as compensation. However, it is commendable if she likes to fast.
