Yellow Discharge

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

I have a question about yellow discharge. During the last days of my periods I get yellow color and yellow discharge. The yellow colored substance is more like a blood like substance and the yellow discharge is like the substance of white discharge in its form and ماده. This yellow discharge and color sometimes stops before ten days, sometimes a few days after ten days, and sometimes it happens many days after my period. I am confused on when to take shower. Sometimes I shower two times. I asked my doctor and she said I don’t have to worry about the yellow. If only brown or red comes then I have to worry. Also, one Aalimah told me these things happen in this age because of hormones, I don’t have to overthink too much. Because I usually get yellow discharge in the non period time, I thought maybe if the yellow discharge comes it doesn’t affect my aadat and periods, but if the haiz-like substance comes, then I have to think it is istihaaza. Then I showered when I saw that the yellow haiz-like substance stops even if the yellow discharge comes. Then I became shakki and then showered on the completion of 10 days too. Usually it doesn’t stop before 10 days are done, that’s why I didn’t know my aadat and always showered after 10 days. This month this happened:

  • Start of period: February 5, 2019 around 6:50 AM
  • End of period: February 14, 2019 around 1:30 PM

Then on February 21, 2019 a foul smelling yellow substance came out. I am sure this isn’t istihaaza. Thereafter, there was yellow discharge for a few days and today also yellow discharge came. And yellow stain also came sometime in February after my period. Please tell my what my aadat is and when to shower and end my period.

Jazakallaah

This issue has few conditions:

  • Within ten days of the start of the blood discharge if the yellow discharge is seen again then it will still be considered حیض (menstrual period). Once it stops it will be necessary to take bath again.
  • If it extends beyond ten days then per the habitual days it will be حیض (menstrual period) and the rest will be the days of استحاضہ (Istihadah).
  • If after ten days during the days of purity, e.g., within fifteen days this yellow color liquid comes then it will not be حیض (menstrual period), during these days you will be in the state of purity.
  • If this substance is seen after fifteen days of purity and is seen at least three days or is seen during the habitual days then it will be considered حیض (menstrual period).
  • Pure white substance which is seen after the حیض (menstrual period), this is not حیض (menstrual period) rather it is the sign of purity. You will remain pure after that.

According to the detail of your menstrual cycle written in your inquiry, February 5th to February 14th will be your days of the menstrual period. During these days you are excused of praying Salaat and the rulings about the impurity will also apply.

And the spots seen on February 21st are not considered as menstrual period, you will be pure during those days, and it will be necessary for you to pray Salaat during those days.

And when this spot was seen again on February 5th, this is the beginning of the habitual days. The ruling about this is mentioned in No. 1 above. If the condition is different then write again to ask the ruling.

NOTE: We don’t know your age. The Rulings in some issues depend on the age whether young age or old age. Knowing the age the Shara’i Ruling can be advised accordingly.
