Eating after Fajr prayer on Eid ul Adha

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

I know one of the sunnahs on Eid ul Adha is not to eat before leaving for Eid prayer and then eating with the qurbani one offers.

But I have couple of questions:

  1. What is the ruling on eating after/around Fajr prayer on Eid ul Adha? For example, if fajr is at 0600 hrs and Eid prayer is at 0830 hrs, can I drink anything after Fajr prayers? If I have been doing opposite of the ruling unknowingly, what is the kaffarah?
  2. One should eat from the qurbani offered per Sunnah. Sometimes the qurbani takes too long to offer due to the services offered at the farm, etc. Is there a cut off time after which one can eat anything if doing qurbani is taking too long?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

It’s only Preferred not to eat before Salat ul Eid on Eid ul Adha, if there is any excuse then there is no harm in eating, and even after Salat ul Eid to begin eating with the Qurbani meat is also Preferred only, it’s not Fard or Wajib. Therefore, if one feels hungry or there is delay in doing the Qurbani then still there is no sin or harm in eating or drinking other things.
