Watching Television or Videos through Other Sources

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum, is it permissible to watch cartoons (anime) or movies or things similar to these on TV or through other sources?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

Purposely watching such cartoons which only have the pictures of living beings and no other prohibited aspects is considered Makrooh-e-Tehreemi (i.e. close to haram) whether they are the common humorous cartoons or some other type. جواہر الفقہ (۷/۲۶۴، ۲۶۵ مطبوعہ مکتبہ دارالعلوم کراچی)

Watching those films or cartoons in which there is music, songs, lewdness, nudity etc. is considered haram. Either ways, it is necessary to refrain from watching them. Please review detailed fatwa regarding this topic under Question No. 233.
