Hadith About Missing Verses in the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah

Could you please provide explanation of hadith number 2286 from Saheeh Muslim where Abu Moosa Ash‘ari RaziAllah Ta‘ala Anhu explains regarding the forgotten or cancelled verses of the Quran? If there really are such verses of Quran which have been cancelled or removed then why aren’t the general Muslims unaware about this fact?

الجواب وباللہ التوفیق

If the questioner’s intent of the question is related to the verses of the Quran considered as mansookh (revoked), then it should be noted that, the ones who have ilm-e-deen have its knowledge and that is enough. Neither the general publich is obligated to learn this type of knowledge nor is it mandatory for them to pursue it. When the general publich is generally unaware of the basic and foundational pieces of knowledge related to the deen, then the question of knowing about mansookh verses which Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala Himself has revoked, isn’t that unnecessary? In addition, when Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta‘ala Himself has cancelled some verses, then what is there for us to know about? If it was mandatory for us to know about it, then the cancellation would not have been necessary to begin with. However, if the questioner’s question is pointing to this concept that the Muslim ummah does not have some parts of the Quran intact with them, then it should be rememberd that it is a unanimous belief of the ummah that not even an alphabet of the Quran is missing from the ummah let alone one or more verses. A person who claims that some of the verses of the Quran are missing or forgotten is astray and will become a source of making other’s go astray, therefore firm repentance and astaghfar is needed from such a belief. Regarding the hadith number you have mentioned, please provide the exact text in order to receive a tailored answer.
