Tim Hortons Donuts

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah

Can we eat donuts from Tim Hortons? Do you have a list of all the Halal grocery items? There is so much confusion about the ingredients especially fats, glycerides etc. written on the products that we do not know what to consume and what to refrain from. As mostly their source (e.g. fruits, vegetables, animals etc.) is not specified.

1- We have reached out directly to the Tim Hortons administration regarding the ingredients of their donuts, which are also available on their website. At this time, there is no ingredient mentioned for their donuts which can be categorized as impermissible from a Shar’ai standpoint therefore, it will be considered permissible to consume it. It should be noted that in their communication, they have clarified that there can be a change to these ingredients at any point in time; therefore, it is the consumer’s responsibility to check and verify such changes on a periodic basis and get the desired satisfaction. If you find a change in the ingredients for the donuts, please provide details regarding that in order to request another ruling.

2- We currently do not have such a list of groceries

3- As far as the usage of grocery items is concerned, until and unless there is proof and confirmation of utilization of haram ingredients in it, or confirmation of an impermissible ingredient’s presence in an unchanged manner, such items cannot be rendered as haram (impermissible). However, due to the existence of suspicion it is advisable to refrain from using any such items.
