Does Licking a Lip Balm Invalidate a Fast?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: AsSalaamuAlaikum wa Rahmatullah,

I have the habit of wearing of lip balm daily and I was in this habit for several years during Ramadan. This lip balm is a thin film with a detectable flavor. Do I need to make up these fasts? Would licking the lips with the presence of such a substance invalidate one’s fast?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

No, the assumption is that you did not swallow the lip balm itself, therefore your fasts were valid.

In general, you should avoid licking your lips during the fast.

And Allah alone gives success.
