Can I Read an English Translation of the Qur’an While Menstruating?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Asalaam Aleikum,

May I read (silently or quietly out loud) an English translation of the Qur’an in the form of a hard copy while menstruating? On a touch screen device such as an iPhone or iPad?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

According to the stricter position, it would not be permitted to recite even a translation of the Qur’an just as it is not permitted to touch a translation without ablution (wudu).

However, a more expansive position would permit the recitation of a translation of the Qur’an.

Note that following the prescribed rulings for menstruation and post-natal bleeding is in and of itself worship as this is what Allah Most High wants at that particular time. Not praying, fasting, nor reciting Qur’an is worship for her. This is mercy.

And Allah alone gives success.
