Why is the Minimum Amount of Recitation in Prayer in the Hanafi School so Low?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Salam,

I would like to know why in the Hanafi school can three verses be read in place of a surah during prayer.

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

The shortest chapter in the Qur’an is three verses, so the Hanafis permit this as a minimum amount of recitation.

The Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Fatiha and a chapter with it, in an obligatory prayer or other than it.” [Tirmidhi]

And Allah alone gives success.

wassalam,
