Question: Assalamu alaikum,
I’ve always thought a marriage between a sunni and a shia is permissible (because both are Muslim). However, after doing some online research and speaking to a few scholars it seems it is actually impermissible.
What is the ruling on this topic? What is the proof behind the ruling?
Answer: walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
Shias are Muslim. As such, it is valid for a Sunni to marry someone Shia. [See: THE AMMAN MESSAGE, especially the scholars’ fatwas.]
In such marriages, there can be considerations of (1) compability, given the differences in beliefs and practice; and (2) life decisions–especially regarding upbringing of children and social relationships.
Given the considerations in such cases, please consult reliable local scholars about the specifics of the situation. Jazakum Allah khayr.
And Allah is the giver of success and facilitation.
