Raising One’s Hands in Supplication When Seeing the Ka’bah

Question: In Shaykh Faraz Khan’s translation of Maraqi al-Sa’adat (“Ascent to Felicity”), footnote 589 on page 152 says that upon seeing the Sacred House, one should not raise one’s hands while making dua’. According to Imam Tahawi, all three Imams of the Hanafi school – Abu Hanifa, Abu Yusuf and Muhammad – hold this to be disliked. Why is this so?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

They held this to be disliked because the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) did not do it, as mentioned in the narration (hadith) related by Jabir (Allah be pleased with him). [`Ayni, Nukhb al-Afkar fi Tanqih Mabani al-Akhbar fi Sharh Ma`ani al-Athar; al-Qari, al-Maslak al-Mutaqassit fi al-Mansak al-Mutwassit]

However, some did consider raising the hands for supplication here recommended, and this is also the position of Shafi`i and Ahmad. [al-Makki, Ghunyat al-Nasik fi Bughyat al-Manasik]

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
