Should We Stop Praying Tarawih Once the Qur’an is Completed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan

Question: Recently a trend has emerged in ramazan, here in pakistan, especially amongst the business community. it is to perform a khatam of the Quran sharif in 10-14 days at the start of ramazan in tarawih, then to perform no further tarawih during ramazan since the Quran sharif has been completed. dear respected shaikh i am writing ask — what is the status of such a practice? does it fulfill the sunna of tarawih?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and states.

Tarawih is an emphasized sunna, to be performed every night of Ramadan. To habitually leave it, without a valid excuse, would be blameworthy and potentially sinful.

It is not a condition to complete the Qur’an in tarawih, but rather a communal sunna. In any case, tarawih should not cease once the Qur’an is completed.
