Pap Smear Test: Will it Invalidate One’s Fast?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Sidi Salman Younas

Question: Is it permissible for a woman to have a pap smear while fasting?

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

I pray you are well.

Taking a pap-smear test, which involves placing a speculum into the vagina of a female, would not break the fast according to sound and followable positions within the Hanafi school. [Rafi` Usmani; Dabit al-Mufattirat]

However, due to the difference of opinion regarding whether the vagina is a valid point of entry that invalidates one’s fast, one should try and consult a reliable doctor on whether such testing can be performed at a time when one is not fasting.
