Is It Permissible to Eat Squid in the Hanafi School?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan

Question: I would like to know whether Squid is Halal for us or not, based on the Hanafi school?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health states.

According to the Hanafi school, the only sea creatures that are permissible to eat are fish (samak). [Nahlawi, Durar Mubaha] Squid are not fish, and are therefore disliked (makruh) and sinful to eat.

There is disagreement on this between the legal schools though, as some of the other schools deem all creatures in the sea to be permissible and lawful to eat.

And Allah knows best.
