Question: Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

What was the circumstance surrounding the unique supplication made for Sayyidina Ali, that Allah may ennoble his countenance? What have the scholars said about some of the virtues about Sayyidina Ali such that we not only ask Allah to be pleased with him, but also ask his countenance to be ennobled?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

Some of the scholars, such as Saffarini in his Ghidha’ al-Albab, mention that they use this expression as he never prostrated to an idol; and others have mentioned other reasons.
