Can I Work at a Supermarket That Sells Pork and Alcohol?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Asalamu alaikum,

I live in a small village where it is hard to find work apart from supermarkets which are relatively easy but they serve alcohol and pork etc.

Is it permissible to work in such a place?

I am new to Islam and I am lost in the sea of divergence of opinions found regarding religious matters in Islam.

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

It is permitted for you to work on the checkout at a shop which sells the impermissible. [see: Can I Work at a Supermarket Checkout That Sells Pork and Alcohol?]

Pray the Prayer of Need (salat al-hajah), and ask Allah to send you work which you’d rather do. [see: How Does One Perform The Prayer Of Need (salat al-haja)?]

I’d consider taking: Absolute Essentials of Islam: Beliefs & Worship (STEP) and: Excellence in Faith & Action (from Ghazali’s 40 Foundations of Religion)
