Fidgeting Actions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

What is the ruling on doing actions like:

Snapping one’s fingers
“Drumming” one’s nails on the desk
Humming
Bouning one’s foot up and down rapidly
etc…

I remember reading somewhere that the actions I mentioned are some of the consequences of listening to Music. Does this mean that they have a sinful nature or are they just makruh tanzihan?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

These are best to avoid, as the believer should be characterized by calmness (sakina) and dignified restraint (waqar). But these matters (outside prayer) aren’t in themselves sinful.

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
