Tying hair back in a pony tail – is that imitating women?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The fuqaha have agreed that it is disliked to have one’s hair tied up in prayer, because the specific Prophetic interdiction against that, as reported in all six major hadith collections. [al-Mawsu`a al-Kuwaitiyya; al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya (1.106); Sarakhsi, Mabsut (1.31); Zayla`i, Tabyin al-Haqa’iq (1.163)]

What is understood from their conditioning the interdiction with ‘in prayer’ is that it is not disliked outside prayer, as long as the hair is tied up in a manly way, unlike the way women customarily do up their hair, and then undone for prayer.

Imam Sarakhsi (Allah have mercy on him) mentions, too, how Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) politely corrected one of the noble descendents of the Beloved of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) when the latter prayed with his hair tied up. There are similar narrations from others, as mentioned by Ibn Abi Shayba (Allah have mercy on him) in his Musannaf (2.323-325) . These confirm the above.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
