Wearing a Kurta in the West

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I want to know if that is ok to wear Kufi and Kurta-Shalwar or Thob (other than work place) while living in west (like US/Canada). My uncle says that one should wear those clothes which the people of that place wear (like pant/shirt) so that it becomes easy for giving them Dawah. I prefer the other clothes because I think that this is the dress of most of the Ulama and Saliheen, and it’s a sign of having love with them.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Any clothing that fulfills the Islamic legal requirements for dress is minimally sufficient. Anything corresponding to the values recommended by the sunna, such as looseness, modesty, restraint, and dignity, would be considered ‘sunna dress’ in a general sense. Something identifiably ‘Islamic’ is in of itself superior, though other considerations may enter to this depending on one’s circumstances—for this, one should consult with reliable local scholars.

There are a growing number of Islamic clothing companies — most notably www.ShukrOnline.com – that combine Western tastes with Islamic values and styles.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
