How many times do we wipe in wudu?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Whilst performing wudu, how many times do we perform masah. I have been taught one time but a sister has told me that it is three times. I also recently found that in the shafii madhab it is done three times.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

It is a confirmed sunna to wash the limbs that must be washed three times. Leaving a confirmed sunna is blameworthy if done once without excuse, and making it a habit to leave such a sunna is sinful. [Maraqi, Tahtawi, Ibn Abidin]

However, it is blameworthy and (in the Hanafi ijtihad) against the sunna to wipe the limbs that must be wiped more than once with new water. [Maraqi, Lubab] Rather, one wipes them with only one wetting of the hands. If one decides to repeat the wiping three times, but with just one wetting of the hands, there is nothing wrong with it.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
