Trade Union Subscriptions

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I would like to know what is the ruling regarding Trade Unions where you pay a regular fee for the Trade Unions’ support and backing in work related issues? Is it permissible?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

There is nothing wrong with being a member of trade unions that seek to safeguard and promote workers’ rights within the bounds of civil conduct and law. In fact, many leading scholars of the 20th Century, including the great spiritual guide and scholar Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Shaghouri (Allah have mercy on him) of Damascus, were actively involved in trade unions.

And Allah alone gives success.
