Medical students & physicians: Patient examination and opposite gender

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Are medical students or medical practitioners allowed to examine patients of the opposite gender? What about when it comes to doing genital exams? Since medical schools require you to learn to do genital exams on the opposite sex what should Muslim students do? Islamically are there exceptions that would allow this or must one refuse to do exams on the opposite gender? The matter is urgent so if you could please respond ASAP I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

It is permitted to examine them to the extent of the educational need. Beyond this, it is to be avoided.

Faraz Rabbani.
