Praying in Pajamas

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I was wondering if it is all right for me to pray my tahajjud and fajr prayers while wearing my pajamas? i am a woman and a sister told me that in the hanafi madhab women are not allowed to pray in any clothing which shows the division between their legs above their knees. my pajama top covers my hips but does not come down all the way to my knees.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

In general, it is somewhat disliked and offensive without excuse to pray in clothes one would not wear in front of respectable people [Durr], for, as Sayyidna Umar (Allah be pleased with him) indicated, Allah is most deserving of our respect.

Clothes that are fitting, such that, while not revealing the actual colour of the awrah, they still define its form completely, are prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman). [Ibn Abidin]

It is best to avoid even loose clothing, especially for women, that shows the division between the legs above the knees, though not obligatory.

Wassalam

Faraz Rabbani.
