Praying at home: Validity of the congregation with one’s wife and mother

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

The closest masjid to me is over an hour away. Is it legal for me to lead two women in jamat? Namely my wife and my mother, and no other men? If this is considered a jamah, am I correct to assume that they should stand behind me?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

One gets the reward of praying in congregation by doing so at home (or elsewhere), or with one’s wife or mother. However, the full reward of congregational prayer is not achieved in other than a mosque. Similarly, there is tremendous reward and spiritual benefit in going to the mosque and praying there.

Thus, do your best to pray whenever you reasonably can at the mosque. When you cannot, strive to pray in congregation whenever possible.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam.

Faraz Rabbani.
