Is there Zakat on Diamonds? If not then what is the reason for it.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

I have heard from some people that there is no Zakat on diamonds. I dont understand why is it so. If someone keeps diamond as a kind of investment or a safer form to keep his money then why should zakat be not calculated on it. Also I want to confirm if what I have heard is true.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The general rule is that there is no zakat on personal belongings, except particular belongings (such as gold and silver) on which zakat has been specified by Allah and His Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace).

Thus, zakat is not due on diamonds unless one purchased them specifically with the express intention of trading in them.

And Allah alone gives success.
