Participating in diwali assemblies

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Here in the UK many children in schools participate in activities such as acting out the nativity play and diwali assemblies. I understand that participating in the religious rituals of non-Muslims is impermissible but what about e.g. a Diwali assembly?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum,

The general ruling would be that Muslim children could not actively participate in such events.

However, one should consult with reliable local Muslim scholars about the best way of action in one’s particular circumstances.

And Allah alone gives success.
