Missing prayers: when can I make them up?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel

I sometimes miss my prayers and am unable to complete them on time, may Allah swt forgive me, ameen.

Is it permissible for me to make up the prayers during the times when generally speaking prayers are not allowed i.e. between Sunrise and Dhuhr, after the time of Asr, and after Maghrib (when the sun is setting), though the latter rarely occurs.

I’d be grateful for clarification over the precise timings when it is completely impermissible to pray, voluntary or obligatory.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

There are three times which no fardh or wajib prayer can be performed, which become due upon a person before the start of these times.

1.From sunrise to after it has risen (15-20 min)

2.When the sun is at its zenith (5min)

3.When the sun turns yellow (25-40 mins before) until it sets

However, those prayer, which become necessary during these times can be performed within them, but it will be offensive (makruh) e.g.

1.Funeral Prayer (Janazah Prayer) once when it is ready

2.Prostration of recitation (Sajdah Tilawat) of a verse in these times.

Likewise it is valid to perform Asr prayer of that day, although offensive (makruh) after the sun turns yellow (which is 40 mins before the sun has set).

Also in the prohibited times (1-3 above) it is highly detested to perform all optional prayers, even though they have a reason e.g. a) an oath was taken to perform the prayer b) two rak’ats become necessary after performing the circumambulation (tawaf) of the Ka’ba.
