Toes in Prostration

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

When I was taught the basics of salat as a child, it was instructed that the toe of the right foot has to remain fixed at one spot through out the prayer (up till the salam). Also in one of the sunni masjids I have seen a notice mentioning that it is the sunna of Prophet (SAW) to always have the five toes of the right foot grounded to one position through out (and during sujud at least 3 toes of the left foot should be touching the ground). Is the salat invalidated by moving the toe unnecessarily from one position to the other. I notice that majority of the people do not obey this sunna. What’s the position of Hanafi school on the position of the toe during the salat?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is a confirmed sunna to keep one’s feet on the ground at all times, and one’s toes pointed to the qibla in prostration. Not doing either is an error and blameworthy. However, it does not invalidate the prayer. [ref: Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Sh. Adib Kallas, Sh. Mahmoud Ashraf Usmani]

Wassalam,
