My Brother Fights With Us

My 18 year old brother is very loud and very aggressive. He yells and fights with my mother all the time. I’ve talked with him many times to no avail, and my father refuses to say anything to him because he thinks he is sick (A.D.H.D: attention deficit; hyper disorder). I am getting very irritated with him to the point that I feel like I want to strike him. What should I do?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah. May the peace and blessings of Allah shower upon our Beloved Messenger, his family, companions, and those who follow them.

Dear Questioner,

Please don’t hit your brother. I can understand how frustrated you must be, but hitting him will not alleviate the situation. Your father needs to take a firm hand with your brother and get him the help he needs. If your brother suffers from A.D.H.D., then his father needs to take him to a psychologist. There are therapies and medicines for people who suffer from this disorder. Also, it needs to be made very clear to your brother that yelling at and fighting with his mother is unacceptable. Don’t forget to pray to Allah to change your brother’s heart and heal his condition.

And Allah knows best.
