Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah’s guidance)
Yes, Shah Waliullah (RA) was a great Hanafi scholar and followed the Ashariyah in theology. There are some deviants who have brainwashed and are trying to brainwash some lay Muslims that the Ashariyah were a deviant sect and were not on Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jama’ah Aqidah. Contrary to this classical scholars like Hafiz Ibn Asaakir (RA) wrote At-Tabyeen Kizbul-Muftari in defence of Abul Hasan Ashari (RA).
What you must know is that there is no such thing as Ashariyah Aqidah, they were from Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jama’ah. Abul Hasan Ashari (RA) was initially a Mu’tazilite. Then after debating with the Mu’tazilite leader Jubbai he went away for three days and saw the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in his dream. Allah Ta’ala guided and on his forth year he returned back to the Ahlus-Sunnah creed. There after he strongly opposed the Mu’tazilites and due to stance some people began to associate the true creed of Ahlus-Sunnah as Asharee, this is why this name came up. In conclusion every scholar that came after Abul Hasan Ashari (RA) (Also Abul Mansoor Maturidi (RA)) belong to either one of them. Because of their Aqidah confirming to ours (Ahlus-Sunnah).
Note: However there were some people who claims to be Ashari but were nor real Ashari’s (Ahlus-Sunnah) because of some deviant beliefs.
And Only Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
