What is the explanation for the calculation that states dreams are 1/46th part of Prophethood?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Assalamu Alaykum Warahamtullahi Wabrakatuhu,

I pray that this question reached you in the best of health and iman. Ameen.

I have read this calculation in my Tirmidhi Sharah but I do not get it. Could you please explain it (even briefly) please? The following is the calculation:

The first Wahy (revelation) came down for Six Months. And Wahy (revelation) lasted 23 years. So the first Wahy being 6 months ( beause 2 six months = 1 Year) 2 x 23 years = 46 months. Thus Dreams are 1/46th part Prophethood.

You may have guessed that it refers to the hadeeth in which rasulullah (SAW) says that Dreams are a 46th of nabuwaah.

Please do remember me in your duas.

jazakallah.

Wassalamu ‘Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

Answer
Bismillaah-ir-Rahmaan-ir-Raheem.

Wa ‘Alaykum-us-salaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.

Before the commencement of Wahiy, for a period of six months, Rasoolullaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would see dreams at night, that would be as clear as crystal the next day. This shows that the beginning of Wahiy was the seeing of Ru’yaa-e-Saalihah (good and true dreams). And since the period was for six months, when calculated as a fraction of the total period of Nubuwwat (prophethood – 23years), it works out to 1/46. That is why Ru’yaa-e-Saalihah is said to be ‘one forty-sixth’ of Prophethood. This ofcourse does not mean that seeing good and true dreams awards you with 1/46 of prophethood. The purpose of this hadeeth is merely to state the virtue of good dreams, and to denote that some dreams do have a meaning and message.

Hope this helps you understand better.

And Allaah knows best.

Wassalaam.
