Why were men, women, and children allowed to view the Prophet’s face after his death?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Assalamu alaykum warahmatullaah
Dear respected ulamaa e kiraam, I am currently studying seerah. Whilst I was reading I found that after the demise of the prophet all the men, women, and children all took turns to view the holy prophet’s face (even his wife). For us it is not permissible to view our wive’s face and it is not permissible for every male and female to view the face of the deceased so why did this take place regarding the prophet’s face?

Secondly, it is said that the prophet’s janaza salaah was performed without an imaam but is was performed with jamaat. So in the jamaat, who was leading it? If there was no leader then how did everyone know when to do the next action at the same time, e.g. when to say allahu akbar?

Jazakumullaah khair for your time and effort

wassalaam

Answer
Bismillah

Assalamu alaikum,

1) Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge, there is no recorded evidence that all the men, women and children viewed the Prophet’s (Sallallaahu alayhi Wa Sallam)’s mubaarak face after he had left the world.

(can you please tell of what seerah book you was reading from)

* It is permissible for the husband to view his wife’s face and vice versa, mahrams can also view their deceased relative also.

2) The Janaazah Salaah of Nabi (Sallallaahu alayhi Wa Sallam) was not performed in Jamaat, rather indivdually, hence there was no Imaam. This is a consensus of the ahlul ilm (people of knowledge).

The Janaza of Nabi (Sallallaahu alayhi Wa Sallam) was also done by the Angels.

….”He also told them to put him on the edge of his grave and move away from him until the angels pray on him. Then the men of his family should enter and pray on him and then the remaining people should pray one by one (individually)’ . ” (Al-Baihaqi )

And Only Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
