Is it allowed to work for charities like Oxfam or Shelter and do fundraising through direct debit?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Assalamu alaikum Dear respected Ulema,

I would like to know if it is permissible to work for charities such as Oxfam or Shelter (helping homeless)?

The job which I am interested in involves found raising, this is done in public by signing up people to give donations through direct debit.

JazakAllah Khair.

Answer
Wa Alaikum Salam,

It is permissible to work for charitable organisation if the donation is attained through halal means and the proceeds are not distributed in a harmful (to Muslims) or Haram manner. Conversely, it will be impermissible to raise funds for organisations that propagate non-Islamic values or cause harm to the Muslim community in anyway such as Christian missionaries.

And Allah knows best
