Answer
Bismillaah-ir-Rahmaan-ir-Raheem.

Assalaamu ‘Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.

Allaah Ta’alaa has made the system of a woman such that she experiences monthly menstruation. Every action of Allaah is replete with wisdom. No decision of Allaah’s is devoid of some benefit. Therefore, if Allaah has made the woman’s natural system such that she menstruates on a monthly basis, there is definitely some wisdom and benefit behind it. When Allaah has instructed women to not fast during their monthly periods, and promised that they will receive the reward of fasting without even observing it, there is some goodness in it for the woman.

Today it has become quite common for women to take contraceptive pills during the month of Ramadhaan, simply because they find it too difficult to make up for the missed fasts later on. We cannot say that its is Haraam, but it is definitely not advisable to do so, unless incase of extreme need. It is best to stick with the natural cycle that Allaah has created for you. However, if a woman still wishes to do so, she should first consult an experienced physician. If there is a possibility of causing harm to the body, she must refrain. If not, she may proceed to take them. (Khawaateen ke Masaa’il Aur unka Hal, pg. 319)

And Allaah knows best.

Wassalaam.
