Animal derived ingredients statement from Beirsdorf:
“The Majority of ingredients used in our products are synthetic or plant-derived (including Glycerine) with very few which are clearly animal based. (of which are:)

1. Lanolin alcohol, Lanolin Alcohol, Glycerol Lanolate, Cholesterol, is derived from sheep wool;the sheep itself is unharmed.
2. Carboxymethyl Chitin, Ostrea and Maris Limus are derived from the outer shell of Crustacean Animals
3. Sodium Tallowate (soap), Zinc Stearate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate is derived from cattle tallow and this does involve slaughter of the animals.
4. Soluble Collagen and Atelocollagen are derived from fish.
5. PEG-8 Beeswax, Cera Alba (wax), Mel (Honey) derived from bee honey
6. Ethyl Ester of Hydrolyzed Silk, Hydrolysed Silk, Silk Powder derived from the silk worm
7. Hydrollizd Milk Protein, Sine Adipe Lac derived from cattle milk.

All the names supplied can be checked against the ingredient listing on the packaging of each product.”

Alcohol statement from Beirsdorf:
“With regard to alcohol, the cosmetic term ‘alcohol free’ refers to Ethanol as a drinking beverage. Ingredients like ‘Lanolin Alcohol’ and Cetyl Alcohol’ are not connected with the drinking beverage, alcohol. Where Ethanol is used in cosmetic products it will be specifically listed as ‘Alcohol’ or Alcohol Denat’ on the product label”

All of the above are pure and permissible to use. Number 3 is Halaal because it goes through a complete metamorphosis hence is not the haraam substance any longer in it’s finished product “sodium tallowate”. Hence according to the information provided, we deem the products of Beirsdorf as permissible for Muslims. However, Beirsdorf can change their ingredients anytime though this is unlikely. Keep an eye on the ingredients. We have asked Beirsdorf to inform of any changes to these statements.

Please Note:
Beirsdorf is a huge company making many cosmetic products. We are not aware of the nature of all products so we say that permissibility is dependent upon the nature of the product and by the use of persons in a Halaal environment. For example, In principle the use of gold is permissible however males are prohibited to wear gold but women are permitted to wear gold. The permissibility of use is conditional as in the case of cosmetics.

The use of lipsticks and other beautifiers are permissible conditionally that it is not used in an unislamic way. To beautify oneself for one’s spouse is exceedingly praiseworthy but certainly not to allure the opposite sex which is totally contrary to Islamic principles and warrants Divine Wrath. In principle, it is permissible but women especially should not expose their beauty to Ghayr Mahaarim (not prohibited in marriages) males. The same principle also applies to males i.e. they must not use any beautifier (whatever) that may be to allure the opposite sex despite the product being Halaal in itself.

Whilst we are sure that most Muslims would adhere to the Islamic Regulations of modesty, we felt it necessary elaborate as we do not wish the permissibility to be misconstrued and misused for unislamic practices. If you are unsure whether a specific product is Halaal to use then please consult with us
