What’s the penalty for not safeguarding against urine and how to protect oneself while urinating outdoors?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
assalaamu alaikum,

There is a hadith, im sorry but i dont know the exact wording, it is something like the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by two graves and both of the people inside were being punished.

one was being punished because he did not protect himself from his urine.

1.is this punisment specifically for urine or does it apply to other kinds of filth aswell?

2. does this mean it is sinful to let oneself get filthy even though one will wash it off or does it only apply to those who do not wash it off?

3. when urinating outside on the ground, how should one protect himself from his urine?

(1) Though Shariah exhorts Muslims to be vigilant and
avoid all types of impurities, this particular hadith
emphasises the need to exercise specific caution when
urinating as urine droplets can splash on to body and
clothes very easily.

This can be understood from the last words of the
Hadith, ‘…..because most of the punishment of the
grave will be due to this.”

(2) The Hadith applies to those who are careless when
passing urine, do not avoid slashes and are negligent
in ensuring a thorough Istinjaa is carried out.

This includes ‘Istibraa’ i.e. Ensuring that urine
droplets have come out completely before washing as it
is quite possible for urine drops to flow after
Istinjaa has been rushed through. One should use
toilet paper to absorb the droplets before washing.

As for intentionally allowing oneself to be defiled,
Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an, “Verily Allah
(SWT) loves those who repent excessively and loves
those who remain pure.”

Therefore it does not behold a believer to
intentionally allow impurities such as urine to come
on to his body or clothes though he may wash it off
later.

(3) When urinating outdoors, one should ensure that
this is carried out sitting down on soft ground where
the urine can be absorbed or a high place where urine
can flow downwards.

Care must be taken that droplets do not splash on to
the body or clothes.

Allah (SWT) Knows Best,
