Nikaah without a mufti and wali: Is it valid?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My question is regarding nikaah. A guy performs nikaah himself (without a mufti and wali) with a girl taking Allah as his witness. The girl accepts this nikaah. He says she is now his wife. What is the ruling on this?

Bismillaah

A: If besides the boy and girl there was no one else present, the nikaah is not valid.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
