Surah Kahf: Protection and Light on Fridays – Fact or Fiction?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q:

1. I have read whoever memorizes the first ten verses from Surah Kahf, he will be protected from the trials of Dajjaal. People say a person who recites Surah Kahf on a Friday will be protected from the trials of Dajjaal, is this correct and mentioned in the Hadith?

2. I have read whoever reads Surah Kahf on Friday, it will act as a light for him from one Friday to the next. I wanted to know by reading Surah Kahf on a Friday will it be a protection as well from one Friday to the next, is this mentioned in the Hadith?

Bismillaah

A:

1. Yes. It is reported from Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

“Whoever recites Surah Kahf on a Friday, he will be protected from all types of fitnah for eight days. If Dajjaal emerges, he will be protected from the fitnah of Dajjaal.”

2. The Hadith you are referring to appears in At-Targheeb wat Tarheeb. The Hadith is as follows:

Hadhrat Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who recites Surah Kahf on the day of Jum’uah, a noor (light)  emanates from beneath his feet and extends to the sky. This noor will shine for him on the day of Qiyaamah, and all his (minor) sins committed between the two Jum’uah’s will be forgiven.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
