Short kurta with slits

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it true that the Kurta/Kafni with slits constitutes ‘Islamic dress’ for men as opposed to the Saudi style long Jubba with no slits, which sometimes also has cuff link sleeves and English type shirt collars?

Bismillaah

A: The long kurta was worn in the time of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). According to Mulla Ali Qari and Allamah Qurtubi the kurta that was worn generally in the day of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum) had no slits. To make a slit is permissible, there is nothing wrong in it and it is also a kurta. It is out of convenience that people have made the slits, like for convenience we have pockets and buttons. All these things did not exist in the time of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum).

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
