Skipping a Birthday Bash: Islamic Perspective on Celebrating Birthdays

Q: Close relatives are celebrating their daughters 21 birtday. Everybody in the family has been invited for a big birthday bash. I informed my wife that we cannot attend because it is an un-Islamic practise. Requesting reference from Quran and ahaadiths condemning these practises and that Allah Ta’ala’s curse is upon such people celebrating birthday parties, the one giving the function and the the people attending it. Please advise.
