Pre-Nikah Functions in Shariah: Permissible or Not?

Q: Is having pre nikah functions found in shariah? We have heard one aalim saying e.g. engagements etc are permissible in principle if no intermingling dancing or exchanging of rings takes place.

A: There is no basis in Islam for engagement functions.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
