Muslim Friend Beaten for Playing Holi with Non-Muslims: Right or Wrong?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: One of our Muslim friends in college played holi with non muslims and the seniors of the college Muslims with long beards beat him mercilessly:

  1. Did they do the right thing or he should have been convinced with ease?
  2. If they did wrong by beating him, are they sinful and should seek apology from him?

A:

1. Many incidents are on account of ignorance. The solution for ignorance is to educate. Both the people should be educated, the one who was beaten and those who beat him. All should be educated. Hence, they should enter some programme of ta`leem. The person who was beaten will realise that he was not supposed to do this and those who beat will know their limits.

2. When both will come to their understanding then the person who was beaten will not see the need for people to ask him for an apology.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
