Zakaat on a diamond ring

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: We are in possession of a gold ring, also made up of diamonds, the ring was valued a year ago R18000.00, the weight is approx 3.93grams, is zakaat payable? I know the Nisaab for gold is 87.8 grams.

A: If this is the only gold in your possession kept for personal use and you do not possess any other wealth, then zakaat is not waajib upon you.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: This is not the only Gold in our possession (The diamond and gold ring which is 3.93grams). I have Given my wife, in Jan this year 29.8grams of gold valued at approximately R23000, she also has in possession Gold Earings that she uses almost daily valued R1000. This combined with the 3.93Grams of the ring mentioned earlier  is still under the Nisaab. The Gold Jewellery was given as Mehr is however not being used on a daily or occasional basis but just kept away, we do not possess any other wealth. Please advise.

A: If this is the only wealth that your wife possess (i.e. she does not possess cash or silver), then zakaat is not waajib upon her since the gold amount is less than the nisaab of gold.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
