Birthday cakes

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it okay to eat cakes on ones birthday? We do not take pictures or play music on birthdays. We go out to eat and cut cakes when we come home. Is this okay?

A: Celebration of birthdays has got no basis in Islam. It was not the way of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah radhiyallahu anhum. Hence, one should refrain from cutting birthday cakes, etc.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
