The Islamic Belief on Khidr: Prophet, Angel, or Wali?

Q: What is the Islamic belief regarding Khidr the green man? Was he a prophet, an angel or a wali? Also does he go around helping walis and stories of him are present throughout Muslim history?

A: With regard to Khidr (Alaihis Salaam) there are two opinions. The preferred opinion is that he is a Nabi.

There are two opinions regarding him being alive.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
