Do Good Deeds Guarantee Paradise?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I came across the below hadith in which the Prophet salla Allahu aleihi wa sallam was asked about a lady (folanah) who prayed etc but was bad towards her neighbours, and he said that she is of the people of the fire.

But wasn’t all Muslims of the time pious people, destined for jannah if they were sahabas? Maybe the particular lady lived outside Medina and never met the Prophet (saws) and thus wasn’t counted as a sahabiah? Or is there any other explanation for why she is a person of the fire?

A: There were all types of people, like we have all types of people. The Qur’aan Shareef speaks of the munaafiqs as well as the kuffar.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
