Drawing and painting

Q: I am working as an Artist. Is drawing and painting landscapes allowed? Secondly is drawing of Animals & Birds permissible? Thirdly is decoration home/Office with sculptures permissible?

A: 

  1. Drawing and sketching of all inanimate objects (e.g. trees, landscapes, etc) are permissible in Islam.
  2. Drawing and sketching of all animate objects are forbidden and haraam in Islam.
  3. The same law that applies to drawings applies to sculptures.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

إن أشد الناس عذابا عند الله يوم القيامة المصورون (صحيح البخاري 2/880 ، صحيح لمسلم 2/201)

وكذا النهي إنما جاء عن تصوير ذي الروح لما روي عن علي رضي الله عنه أنه قال من صور تمثال ذي الروح كلف يوم القيامة أن ينفخ فيه الروح وليس بنافخ فأما لا نهي عن تصوير ما لا روح له لما روي عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه أنه نهى مصورا عن التصوير فقال كيف أصنع وهو كسبي فقال إن لم يكن بد فعليك بتمثال الأشجار (بدائع الصنائع 1/116)
